Positive and Negative Impacts of Floods on Societies

When speaking of floods and their impacts, emphasis is generally placed on their destructive nature. Flood hazards are unique in the sense that they have not only harmful, but also beneficial impacts. In IFM, it is important to look at both the positive and negative impacts of floods and consider the floods as a natural process rather than only as nature’s interference or a hindrance to economic development. In order to identify all the stakeholders and to address the vulnerability factor of flood risks, it is important to understand the beneficial as well as the negative impacts of floods.
