The traditional risk assessment procedure:

  • takes into account a so-called natural variability (the uncertainty associated with the inherent randomness of natural processes), and
  • disregards other types of uncertainties (resulting from an incomplete knowledge on the system under investigation), commonly termed the knowledge uncertainty.
