Characterization of floods

In general the hydrograph of flood flows can be separated into the three components:

  • surface runoff (overlandflow),
  • subsurface runoff (interflow),
  • groundwater flow (baseflow).

The shape of each hydrograph component and its share at the total flow varies in dependence on the physiographic characteristics and the anthroposphere of the catchment and the meteorological condition of the storm event(*1).
