Risk assessment

Methodology

Risk assessment is an estimation of the objective risk. The basic steps are:

  • Hazard identification
  • Hazard characterisation/ analysis (hydrological and hydraulic modelling)
  • exposure and assessment
  • risk specification and quantification
  • Consequence analysis (economic, social and environmental)

Scales for the analysis

Decisive for the choice of an appropriate risk assessment method and the necessary for the evaluation of appropriate mitigation measures it is necessary to define different scales for the analysis. Depending on the exent of the investigated area three different layers are defined:

  • Microscale approach
  • Mesoscale approach
  • Macroscale approach
